How to Show Up on Google Maps with Your Business (Step by Step)

September 16, 2026 6 min readLocal SEO

Many customers aren't searching for your business name: they are searching for “near me.” Your Google Business Profile dictates whether you show up in that exact moment.

When someone searches for “dentist near me” or “hardware store in Santiago,” Google prioritizes a map displaying three local businesses. Being in that top three usually brings in more calls than standard search results, and it doesn't depend on having the biggest website, but rather having a properly optimized profile.

Step 1: Create or claim your profile

Search for your business name on Google. If a user-generated profile already exists, claim it; if it doesn't appear, create one through Google Business Profile. You will need to verify that you own the business, typically via phone, video, or a postcard.

Step 2: Fill out everything, leave no fields blank

  • Exact business name, without stuffing unnatural keywords.
  • Correct primary category, plus accurate secondary categories.
  • Address and service area (if you offer mobile or home services).
  • Local phone number and link to your website.
  • Business hours, including holidays.
  • Services or products with custom descriptions.

Step 3: Upload real, recent photos

Show your storefront, interior, team, and products. Profiles with authentic photos generate significantly more clicks than those using stock imagery. Upload new photos every month: recent activity gives you a boost.

Step 4: Reviews, the most heavily weighted factor

  1. Ask for the review at the moment of peak customer satisfaction, not a week later.
  2. Share your short review link via WhatsApp or through a QR code at the counter.
  3. Respond to all reviews, good and bad, within 48 hours.
  4. Never buy reviews: Google detects them and can suspend your profile.

Step 5: Ensure your website backs up the same info

Your Name, Address, and Phone Number (NAP) must match exactly across your Google profile, website, and social media. Add a contact page to your site featuring an embedded map, a clickable phone number, and your business hours. That consistency is one of the most vital local ranking signals.

Mistakes that hold most businesses back

  • Wrong category (e.g., a specialized clinic registered just as a generic “medical office”).
  • Outdated hours: this leads to preventable negative reviews.
  • Using a cell phone number that no one answers.
  • Having a perfect Google profile but a website that is slow or unreadable on mobile.
